《中国药典》记载猪宝具有清热解毒、化痰定惊的功效。现代研究发现其含胆红素、胆酸等活性成分，对金黄色葡萄球菌的抑制率可达85%。最新药理学研究表明，猪宝提取物能显著降低脑缺血再灌注损伤（动物实验显示梗死面积减少38%）。临床应用中，安宫牛黄丸等名贵中成药以天然猪宝为君药，疗效优于人工替代品。值得注意的是，科研级猪宝要求胆红素含量＞12%，且需提供无抗生素、无重金属残留的检测报告。
